Visiting Tarab

live performance piece commissioned by Tarek Atoui for  Sharjah Art Foundation  (Sharjah, U.A.E.) , PERFORMA (New York, U.S.), La Nuit Blanche (Paris. Fr.),  and Serpentine Gallery I London, U.K.  (2011-12).

Organized by Lebanese artist Tarek Atoui, « Visiting Tarab »  incorporate elements of the world’s largest collection of Classical Arab music as interpreted by 12 to 22 musicians and sound artists ranging in expertise from hip hop to electronic and contemporary music. Atoui invited these musicians and sound artists from different origins and practices to Beirut to explore the collection in order to realize one composition each, creating a 5 hour performance inspired by the structure and rules of “Tarab”.
